At Gorham, Maine, August 26, 1847, their eldest son, Henry Nichols White, was born. At one time he was close to death but through the faithful prayers of his parents the child became well again. On July 28th 1849, their second child, James Edson White, was born. By now she had a heavy travel schedule and so for the child’s sake she had to leave him with a faithful family to continue in the work the Lord had commissioned her to do. On August 29th 1854, another member was added to their family in the birth of Willie. In 1860 tragedy struck again and ‘broke a branch of their family tree’ - little Herbert, born Sept. 20, 1860, died December 14 of the same year. When that tender branch was broken, how their hearts did bleed. None may know but those who have followed their little ones of promise, to the grave. When their noble Henry died on December 8th 1863 at the age of sixteen, both parents and the two remaining sons felt the blow most keenly. But God comforted them in their bereavements, and with faith and courage they pressed forward in the work He had given them, in the bright hope of meeting their children who had been torn from them by death, in that world where sickness and death will never come. Then after many years of ceaseless service for the Lord, experiencing
many illnesses, having a burden for souls and writing many publications of
Christ filled materials, James
White quietly breathed his life away, on August 6, 1881.
Mrs. White's life was closely linked with that of her husband in strenuous gospel work until his death, and
she missed him tremendously. They had traveled extensively over the
United States, preaching and writing, planting and building churches, organizing
and administering. Time and test have proved how broad and firm
were the foundations they laid, and how wisely and well they built. The years 1885 to 1887 she devoted to work in the
leading countries of Europe, where she often addressed large audiences,
and continued her writing. Subsequently she spent nine active years in
Australia and New Zealand. From her pen have come forty-five volumes,
large and small, in the fields of theology, education, health, and the
home, and practical Christianity, several with a distribution exceeding
the million-copy mark. Close beside her chair, on a table, were kept several
of the books she had written. These she would often handle and look over,
seeming to delight in having them near. Like an affectionate mother with
her children, so was she with these books during her last sickness.
Several times, when visited, she was found holding two or three of them in
her lap. “I appreciate these books as I never did before,” she at one
time remarked. “They are truth, and they are righteousness, and they are
an everlasting testimony that God is true.” She rejoiced in the thought
that when she could no longer speak to the people, her books would speak
for her. Her entire life was
devoted to winning others to love Him and serve Him with all the heart. .
. . “Mrs. White ceased her work here as she began, poor in this world’s goods. Her income from her books, (no inconsiderable sum) has been used freely in giving assistance to needy enterprises and needy people. Her heart had always been sympathetic, and her own hands had often ministered to the sick and suffering. The end to this great life came at 3:40 o’clock Friday afternoon, July 16, when Ellen White fell asleep in Jesus, “as quietly and peacefully as a weary child going to their rest.” In her teaching, Christ is recognized and exalted as the only Saviour of sinners. Emphasis is placed upon the bold and unqualified announcement of the disciples that ‘there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.’ The power to redeem from sin and its effect is in Him alone, and to Him all men are directed.
